Brighton Hip Hop Festival + Born To Rock presents: Battle Jam 2007
Sunday July 8th 2007 - Sallis Benney Theatre, University of Brighton, Grand Parade, Brighton, BN1 0JY T: 01273 643010 W: www.brighton.ac.uk/gallery/ So it’s that time again, the 8th annual Born to Rock Battle Jam in association with the Brighton Hip Hop Festival. It’s also the 15th Anniversary of the Born to Rock crew, so please come have some birthday cake! The first jam of it’s kind in the UK, and probably still the only one to show off all the lovely hip hopity elements of this beautiful culture crammed in to one day. The whole point of the event is to show the culture as whole, as it should be, and to enable all those who attend to see and experience the other elements in action. This results in an electric atmosphere and an environment where creativity gets as much props as the show off stuff, and style has equal status to power, an environment we all thrive in. If you love Hip Hop attend at all costs! Speech over, down to the nitty... Sunday 8 July 2007 12.00pm doors open / 1-8pm main event Everyone battling gets free entry, otherwise: £8.50 per person / £27 family ticket (2adults + 2kids under 16yrs) / £6 kids under 10yrs / no other concessions. Tickets from - Dome Box Office, New Road, Brighton, BN1 8AB. Telephone: 01273 709709. Or on the door. Proposed battles this year are: Crew battles - crews can be any size, and can include any of the dance styles of the Hip Hop culture. So your crew may be all breakers, or may have poppers and lockers too. There is no advantage either way cause the pressure is all on the judges to not only look at move on move action, but the overall crew performance, unity and style. Battles will be 7 minutes. B-Girl 2 on 2 - as it says on the tin, B-Girls two on two battles. Need more representation here, I know the B-Girls are out there! Battles will be two sets each. Popping solos - 1 on 1 elimination battles, two sets each. Locking solos - Same as popping. DJ turntablist - making a comeback due to popular demand. Limited to 8 DJ’s due to time constraints so first come first served (so to speak!). Emceeing - 1 on 1 elimination battles. It’s in Brighton so believe if you enter this you need to bring all your skills and confidence, the locals are very competent! Beatbox - 1 on 1 elimination battles oral percussion style. Funky Drummer Drum Battle - 4 drummers going against each other with funk breaks. Three one minute rounds each. We only have room for one more drummer so sign up quick. Battle of the Juniors - Two local crews of newbies battling it out Old v New - The days finale, all old school (started pre 1990) on one side, all new school (started post 1990) on the other, in what may be better described as an all out rumble than a battle. A lot of crews have to split and battle each other for this, which adds to the tension! Graffiti – For now people can register their interest in this. Unfortunately, unless the renovation to the courtyard is ready we won’t be able to include the writers, sorry! We will know by beginning of June and will contact all those registered (limited to 8 places). Entry rules - There aren’t really any I can think of at the mo, just wanna request a couple of things that would be good manners and help things run smoothly. 1st, please register your entry a.s.a.p. this saves a lot of chasing and helps with securing prizes. 2nd, mean it when you register. Some elements are restricted to a number of people so it would be helpful that if something else more important comes up, you let me know so we can reply to someone we’ve had to turn down. Judges - Details coming soon Prizes – You’re coming for the dopest holistic Hip Hop experience you’ll have this year. And to make it even sweater we have prize contributions from Eastpak, Low Life, Kymberlee Jay, and Zebra Traffic. DJ‚s - For dance battles - Prone, Just 1, Credit One, Dek One and Rob Life. For the Emcees Brighton based ‘Slip Jam:B’ will be running the show (www.myspace.com/slipjamb) That’s it for now. Please contact me at thebattlejam@hotmail.co.uk Cheers, Suspence P.S.
